How to solve word problems without equations and their systems

Abstract

The seminar will introduce a method using graphical representation, where the individual parts of the graph by their size or mutual proportions correspond to the relations of the assignment. The presented method of graphical solution of word problems proved to be easy to learn in practice.

It is widely applied and developed within the framework of the so-called Singapore mathematics and can be applied in solving word problems at all types of schools. Thanks to the graphical representation it enables the pupils to understand the context of the task and thus increases the pupils' success in solving.

When used appropriately, it forms a suitable intermediate step between the heuristic approach and the solution using equations.
