Old Christian loanwords in Czech and Slovenian

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

The ancestors of Slovenians and Czechs (Moravians) lived in territories that were exposed to the penetration of Western Christianity from early on and thus they were among the first Slavic peoples to become acquainted with Christian terms. Close analysis of Czech and Slovenian forms thus can reveal the history of specific Christian loanwords in more detail.

In this paper, the origins andhistories of the words biskup/škof, kříž/kríž and církev/cérkev are reconsidered in an attempt to precisely define the time and route of the borrowing.
