The Czech minority has existed in Croatia for more than 200 years and most of its members are bilingual, for most of them Czech language is still a functional communication tool, which is used daily mainly in private communication. The paper is based on research conducted in 2010-2016 in compatriot families from around Daruvar and presents the views of compatriots on their lives with two languages, answers questions on which basis they decide which language to use in a particular situation, (not) the awareness of code switching and the mother tongue question.
