Determination of K0 in aged clays using DMT

Abstract

This study deals with the determination of the earth's pressure coefficient at rest "K0" by field measurement using DMT (Marchetti's flat dilatometer) in aged clays. Generally, it is complicated task to determine K0 coefficient in a natural soil let alone in aged clays.

In these cases, all available techniques for determining of K0 are affected by non-negligible imperfections and uncertainties which leads to unrealistic results. However, this fact is often ignored, like in the case of the using of the original Marchetti's formula for computing of K0,DMT despite author's warning.

This study shows a relatively new approach to determining K0 coefficient. It is a combination of the determining of K0 by using back numerical analysis and field measurements by DMT which leads to a more realistic result.
