Abstract

In the summer of 1651 the Dutch republic prohibited its diplomats from accepting presents of any kind, including food and accommodation. This measure marked a significant violation of the contemporary diplomatic culture and affected the reputation of the Republic in the eyes of foreign partners negatively.

The paper investigates the background of this step and presents it as a result of a securitization process aimed at corruption in the scope of the regime transition of the Republic in 1650/51
