Abstract

A study of the commemorative practice of state-enforced celebrations shows that the Slovak Ludaks, acting most of the time as political opposition during the First Republic, have successfully seized selected topics that were originally intended to legitimize the project of a united nation and the construct of historical Czechoslovak statehood. The expectation that the Slovak population would fully identify with this project was only partially fulfilled.
