Abstract
The encyclopedia entry introduces the phenomenon of Peshmerga - Kurdish national resistance fighters. Based on the perspective of conceptual history, the text analyzes the roots of the term and its changing connotations across historical periods, regions, and political party affiliations.
It stresses that the social institution of Peshmerga in the Kurdish society of Iraq is one of the very few available vehicles of social mobility.
