Abstract

The paper described the firts steps in the research probe on Czech Deaf children's socio-cognitive competence assessed through the Theory of Mind Task Battery (ToMTB). Despite the lack of any empirical data, Deaf children are declared to reach lower milestones compared to their hearing peers in all areas - including socio-cognitive skills, as a consequence of deafness per se, in the Czech republic.

Theory of mind in Deaf children (i.e., understanding of person's mental states like emotions, beliefs, desires, intentions, etc.) has been intensively studied in the last years around the world. Thus, the author used the ToMBT to gain the first empirical data of socio-cognitive competence of Czech Deaf children - both Czech Sign Language users and Spoken Czech language users.

The conceptual background, the adopting process of ToMTB to the both Czech and Czech Sign Language, the study design, some of the very first outputs and conclussions were presented in the paper.
