Abstract

The first chapter, 'Preliminary Determining the Place of The Origin of the Work of Art within the Totality of Heidegger's Philosophy', written by Jaroslav Novotný, draws on the analyses of H.-G. Gadamer and F.-W. von Herrmann and suggests reading Heidegger's essay in consideration of three key factors.

Firstly, Novotný reminds us that Heidegger's philosophy answers certain questions related to the spiritual developments which took place at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. Secondly, he points out that certain constants determining Heidegger's philosophy since the 1920s appear also in The Origin of the Work of Art.

Finally, Novotný lays emphasis on the fact that The Origin of the Work of Art falls fully into the thinking of Ereignis and the history of being, and that it is in this context that we must read it in order to gain a full understanding.
