Abstract

The dismal situation of a world that is heading towards globalization shows that the coming years will not be easy whatsoever. There are still new questions arising that make us wonder if this globalization is possible at all, and whether it is a dead end.

The authorities of the world ecumenical movement have been dealing with the political contexts for the entire half of the twentieth century, and although open dialogue was not possible (until the changes at the end of the 1980s), it was clear that Christians must also respond dynamically to the dynamic development of the world. Unfortunately, instead of qualified dialogue, the loosening that had taken place led to many misunderstandings and deeds that have little to do with honest ecumenical endeavours.

True dialogue is developing very slowly, and we hope that it will, nevertheless, continue and develop. The views of the Holy See and the "Geneva" Ecumene have changed considerably.

In World Orthodoxy, there is a refinement that may seem very negative to us today but it can ultimately mean moving forward. All of this is what we want to monitor in our magazine's pages and contribute to a truly working discussion.

Practically, this means continuing the legacy left by the creators of the modern ecumenical movement in the world and here in the Czech Republic. No topics are closed today, and it is not impossible to discuss them.

The new generation of responsible theologians is well aware that they must build on what has already been done, but at the same time, they must face the unprecedented challenges of present day. This requires tremendous effort and, above all, enormous level of education and insight - not only in theology, but also in scientific fields that have remained more or less distant for theologians in the past.
