Limiting friction in synovial joints - principle of hydrating lubrication

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |
2019

Abstract

The origin of arthrosis due to disturbance of the joint tribology has been theoretically known for long time. However, the principles of tribology and the consequences of its disruption are rarely explained.

The function of the cartilage surface layer is also not entirely clear. The authors describe the importance of friction in synovial joints and the principles of experimental studies.

They introduce the reader to the problem of hydration lubrication and the role of phospholipids, which they investigate in they work and test their binding to hyaluronic acid. Authors describe the design of such experimental studies.

The theoretical and experimentally proven impact of the investigated properties of phospholipids is promising for further practical use in viscosupplementation of synovial joints.
