Abstract
This article is the introduction to a series on the sacred songs of Czech contemporary composers. The author points out that contemporary sacred music offers a wide range of vocal compositions, enabling them to be used during religious services.
Although the totalitarian regime in Czechoslovakia, with its anti-church restrictions, interrupted the centuries-long continuity of the development of this genre, sacred songs were composed, until 1989 especially in the unofficial sphere.
