Abstract
The text review author's experience with transnational feminist dialogue and suggests several ways of conceptualizing of communist and postcommunist experience from a gender perspective. Following conceptualiztions of "Eastern" difference are presented: Europe's periphery, a delicate relationship between feminism and nationalism, new beginnings, postcolonial reaction, modernization.
It also suggests conceptualizations of gender order under communism and moreover it identifies the legacy of communist era for contemporary gender order.
