Abstract
This paper focuses on both the general strategies and the specific activities of the Yugoslav power elite related to the imminent passing of Josip Broz Tito. It analyzes the context in which the foundations of the post-Tito power model were laid during 1978-80, which was to become one of the fundamental legitimizing and stabilizing pillars of the Yugoslav socialist system in the period following Tito's death.
Attention is also paid to the complex international (the invasion of Afghanistan) and domestic (economic difficulties, growing activity of anti-regime groups) circumstances that had a strong influence on then current Yugoslav events and which immediately preceded Tito's death in May 1980.
