Abstract

This book is focusing on the situation of the railway industry in the Czechoslovak transportation policy and in its economic system in the 1970's and 1980's. The railway industry used to be one of the most important pillars of the Czechoslovak economy at the beginning of 70's.

Changes in the economic conditions, raising competition with the road transportation and difficulties of the Czechoslovak economy led the railway industry to deep stagnation at the end of 80's. This book analyses the development through a view on actors and institutions, inner mechanisms of the railway industry and the state of the railway industry in the fields where the weak points of the system were mostly visible.

The development of international cooperation and also of the situation in most of the neighbouring railway companies helps to better contextualisation of the topic. The analysis of the state of railway industry showed a number of malfunctions of the economic system while filling the transportation policy framework and thus reducing the inner reserves in the industry.
