Abstract

This paper will focus on the reaction of the Communist Party of Belarus (KPB) and its nomenclature elites to new political and social changes and challenges in Belarusian society, and in particular to the emergence of a new wave of national emancipation at the end of 1980s. The paper will analyze the Communist Party's attitude and the strategies it applied to the new "informal" structures, parties, and organizations, which had a considerable impact on the Belarusian society of that period.

In addition, the paper will analyze the Communist Party's attempts to promote the national (Belarusian) language in the educational system of the late 1980s.
