Development of Mathematics Education in the Czech Republic (1989-2018): From a Search for Structure to Mathematical Literacy

Abstract

Education has always played an important role in the history of the region of the Czech Republic. Five phases of the development after 1989 are differentiated: (a) deconstruction (1990-1991) - characterized by standing against current state; partial stabilization (1991-2000) - decision making on what needs to be addressed and analysing the state of education; system reconstruction (2001-2004) - release of National Programme for the Development of Education) (2001) and subsequent Educational Framework Programmes; implementation (2005) - elaboration of school education programmes and working according them.

The chapter describes the characteristics of the phases, legislative documents and development of the approaches to conception of mathematics education, mathematics teacher education, textbooks, forms of assessment. The chapter concludes with a reflection on the problems of mathematical education in the Czech Republic and the outlook for the future.
