Abstract

In the international discourse on alcohol abuse in recent years, increased attention has been paid to the alcohol harms to others (AHTO). These are not only the closest family members, but also co-workers, employees and employers, and all who necessarily meet with persons over-drinking alcohol.

In the Czech Republic, hazardous drinking and its high consumption is a long-term serious social pathological phenomenon. Although there are several studies that quantify and analyse the overall social and economic impacts associated with alcohol, they do not specifically address the damage that other people have to share with alcoholics.

The article presents an overview of the results of such studies on this topic from abroad and available Czech data to point out the lack of the evidence-based information in the Czech Republic. Coverage of this gap could significantly contribute to the implementation of more effective alcohol policy in the Czech Republic.
