Baťa Departments Stores in Prague

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

The shoe company Baťa has experienced more of a scholarly attention recently. However, their newly built department stores stay mainly aside of it.

This article is dealing with 8 examples built in Prague in the late 1920s and 1930s. They nicely illustrated development of company architecture as well as theirs alterations.

The first and the most influential department store was built on Wenceslaus square in 1929 and after that served as a model for later department stores (Žižkov, Nusle, Celetná ulice). With the department store built in Vysočany and late in Libeň and Letná they lost their progressive glass fasades and were constructed much more traditionally accommodating more of the empoyees' flats.
