Kulak trials in the Strakonice district in the mid-1950s

Abstract

This study explores the court trials of so-calld "kulaks" that accompanied the final phase of collectivisation in the Strakonice district in the České Budějovice region in the second half of the 1950s. It focuses on the change in policy as regards private farmers and summarises the legal and economic framework of the period from the mid-1950s.

Attention is also paid to mass operations to establish new United Agricultural Collectives in the Strakonice district, where collectivisation took place slowly and with difficulty. On the basis of an analysis of archival documents, testimonies of the witnesses, regional periodicals and court judgments this paper highlights the casees of the farmers Boháč, Miřička, Švec and others, trial methods and different approach regarding to punishments of kulaks in the mid-1950s and at the end of 1950s comparing to the period which preceded.
