Colorectal cancer is a malignant disease affecting the colon and rectum. Second generation of colon capsule endoscopy (CCE2) has the potential to become a so-called fllter test in those with positive faecal occult blood test (FOBT).
The examination is minimally invasive, painless and with minimal risk of complications. ln the Czech Republic since 2016 a multicentre prospective study has been carried out in three Centers for screening colonoscopy. The aim of the study is to compare the effectiveness of colon capsule endoscopy and optical colonoscopy (OC).
The main endpoint is the negative predictive value of capsule endoscopy for polyps >=10 mm. The study results show that capsule endoscopy achieves a high negative predictive value for polyps of >=10 mm and has the potential to become a qualityfilter test in people with positive FOBT.
During this study, results and evalution time of capsule records between nurses and doctor were compared. The reading time and the evaluation of the capsule record by endoscopic nurses reached the same level as doctors.
The study shows that experienced nurses, if there is possibility to change competencies, can perform examination by colon capsule themself including subsequent evaluation of capsule records. This approach can increase the capacity and availability of examinations and increase the number of patients in the screening programme.
