Transformations of the Stereotype of Snake in Czech Language and Culture

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2019

Abstract

There were lots of myths and stories related to the motive of snake in folk tradition. Very common is the concept of a snake as a protector of a house (the landlord snake).

Its death could bring misfortune to the house. A picture of a snake as a danger for humans and another animals also plays important role.

The contribution summarizes the motive of snake in folk tradition as well as contemporary (mainly prosaic) folklore and the results are compared with Czech dictionary material (phraseological, etymological, reference dictionaries etc.). Then the transformations of the stereotype are described.

Methodology is based on principles of cognitive-cultural linguistics.
