Hitbodedut: Seclusion, Isolation and Meditation in Early East-European Hasidism

Abstract

The article deals shortly with the issue of hitbodedut, seclusion, isolation or meditation, in early East-European Hasidism represented by Tzava'at Ha-RiBaSH ve-hanhagot yesharot. It briefly introduces the history of this spiritual concept in Judaism and tries to show its place in Hasidism.

To achieve its goal this article contains four short passages from Hasidic book Tzava'at Ha-RiBaSH ve-hanhagot yesharot that are translated from Hebrew and supplemented with short commentaries that are trying to show the attitude of early Hasidism to hitbodedut.
