Abstract

The Danish painter Emil Nolde was born in 1867 as Emil Hansen in the village of Nolde in southern Denmark. For a time, he became close to the painters of the Brücke group in Dresden and became the embodiment of the poetics of expressionism.

He opened a wide range of intoxicating colored fairies. In his figural paintings, landscapes and still lifes, he completely subordinated the shapes to the exciting psychic effect of mutually contrasting colored surfaces.

His work was condemned by the Nazis as a so-called "perverted art", but after the war he was worshiped as one of the world's greatest artists.
