Jusepe de Ribera vol. Spagnoletto came to Italy from Spain.
Through Parma and Rome, where he absorbed Caravaggio's impulses, he traveled to Naples, established a painting workshop there, educated a number of pupils, and became a court painter of the Spanish Viceroy. He brought chiaroscuro and naturalism to unattainable perfection and excelled in his ability to empathize deeply with human destinies.
His brushwork "tremendo impasto" captured the most subtle tremors of emotion.
