The publication deals with spinal cord injury in 26 chapters - from its origin to the return of the individual to normal life. The general part summarizes anatomical and pathophysiological notes, examination procedures, clinical picture, prognosis and epidemiological data.
The main sections of the book correspond to the acute, postacute and chronic phases after spinal cord injury. The section entitled Acute Phase describes pre-hospital care, traumatic and non-traumatic causes, including the principles of treatment and intensive postoperative care.
In the most comprehensive section of the Postacute Phase, the effects of spinal cord lesions on individual human organ systems are discussed in detail. Institutional medical, nursing and rehabilitation care is mapped here, but the space is also devoted to the psychological and social area.
In the Chronic Phase section, topics typical of the tertiary period follow. Finally, the basic directions of research are presented and the development and current state of the spinal program in the Czech Republic is described.
