Implementation of donation after circulatory death (DCD) program has a potential to significantly increase the pool of transplantable organs. A typical DCD donor is a patient with unsurvivable brain injury, who does not fulfil formal criteria of brain death.
The DCD implementation is supported by Czech legislature and guidelines are available. Yet, only few hospitals have implemented it.
This educational paper summarises ethical, medical and logistical challenges related to DCD organ donation program.
