The nonequivalence of sentence equivalents

Publication

Abstract

The article deals with the problems related to the so-called sentence equivalents in the description of Czech syntax as well as with the connection of the mentioned label to what is termed a sentence - utterance distinction. Also, it shows how the view of sentence equivalents depends on the interpretation of the very notion of predication.

It maps the occurence of sentence equivalents in Czech syntactic treatises and, as a result, it suggests that due to its conceptual vagueness the label should not be used.
