Abstract

The essay discusses the treatment of religious belief in the Gaelic poetry of Derick Thomson (1921-2012), from the Outer Hebridean island of Lewis, off the northwest coast of Scotland, surveying Thomson's poems about his encounters with varieties of Presbyterianism, notably the Free Church, and exploring also nuances and religious allusions in poems about his own experience.
