Did the Bratislava glassmaking furnace contain a melting pot, "pernica" or melting tank?

Abstract

The article focuses attetion on the search for suitable term for the archaeological find of an as yet unpublished artefact in which glass was melted and which was a part of the melting chamber in a discovered glassmaking furnace from the 9th/10th century investigated in Bratislava. The terms crusible, small melting pot, melting pot, "pernica" reservoir and melting tak are analysed from the perspective of their function in the historical glass industry and their admissibility in the grammatical rules of the Slovak language.

A strong emphasis is placed on a comparison of Czech and Slovak terms concerning glassmaking. Based on this analysis, we select the most appropriate name for the analysed construction artefact of the early medieval glassmaking furnace.
