The Czech lands had neither natural nor cultural prerequisites for transhumance and summer mountain farming. For the Middle Ages, evidence of these agricultural strategies is completely lacking, and to a lesser extent, they were implemented only in the early modern period, especially in the Moravian part of the Carpathians.

Medieval seasonal settlements are therefore represented by localities associated with non-agrarian activities in the forest areas and mountains (mining settlements, forest crafts and glassmaking). In all cases secondary agricultural activities are expected and sometimes directly documented.
