Abstrakt
Obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIs) are classified as 3rd and 4th degree perineal tears. OASI is a major cause of faecal incontinence and may reduce quality of life in a healthy woman.
One method of reducing OASI risk is by manual perineal protection during the final moments of the second stage of labor. The aim of this study was to determine whether the Finnish MPP technique is being used according to standard teaching by clinicians at Croydon University Hospital during vaginal delivery.
This study took place in Croydon University Hospital between August 2017 and May 2018. From this observation it is clear that the Finnish MPP technique is well known and practiced amongst the clinical staff in CUH.
The technique however does not appear to be standardised across all clinicians. It is not clear from these observations whether variations in the technique affects the rate of OASIs.
New strategies for the training and clinical support of staff performing deliveries have been recommended to optimize the correct use of the Finnish MPP technique.
