Abstract

The second generation of Muslims in the Czech Republic consists mainly of young Muslims, descendants of parents of migrants who came to Czechoslovakia, respectively the Czech Republic, who came in the 1970s and 1990s as a part of student and labour migration. Their socialization took place in the context of the Muslim family and in the context of Czech school.

While within the Czech school and peer group, they were given values referring to the Czech majority, education within the Muslim family offered values of the country of origin and values associated with Islam. The cultural rules referring to the country of origin of the parents only recognized indirectly, from their narration.

This may create a potential conflict in the expectations of parents and the Czech majority society. The experience of the second generation migrants contributes to the construction of a multi-tiered identity that places them in the social space within their move.

The main aim of my project is to describe how second-generation Muslims in the Czech Republic construct their identity and sense of belonging. The main categories that will be pursued in the research are the relation to religion, education, family origin, intergenerational and partner relationships, and orientation in society.
