Abstract

The Stará Kouřim Stronghold (Kolín district), one of the largest early medieval fortified centres in Bohemia, became subject of systematic archaeological excavation in late 40s' and 50s' of 20th century. That excavation uncovered, among others, some exceptionally preserved relicts of a huge entrance gate.

In 1952, the excavation director, Miloš Šolle, decided to carry out an experimental reconstruction of the gate, using original building materials and technologies, with the view to present the unique excavation results for general public. This pioneer project of research on past technologies and presentation of achaeological heritage showed inspiration for next generations of Czech and Slovak scholars.
