Registers in Czech

Abstract

When looking at texts and their diversity, we can apply two perspectives: either we focus on the external characteristics of the text, such as the graphic layout of the text, declared genre, target audience, etc., or examine the language used, such as how often questions are used in the text, or whether there is a conditioning method in it. This is mainly the second, in-text perspective, which helps to identify registers in the language.

These can be seen - similar to organ registers - as alternative ways of expressing the content we want to convey. This book discusses how to identify and characterize these registers in language using empirical and quantitative methods based on extensive corpus data.

He draws inspiration from the famous multidimensional analysis of Douglas Biber, which is applied to Czech on a larger scale for the first time.
