Becoming authentic : Sartrian sadomasochism of fieldwork

Publication at Faculty of Social Sciences |
2019

Abstract

This text represents reflexive analysis of an anthropologist's coping mechanisms with fieldwork. It deals with the problem of the dialectic of researcher as subject and object, focusing on the anthropologist's own body in the field.

The researcher's dilemma of dealing with his or her own objectivization is compared to the Sartrian notions of sadist and masochist who approach the problem of the body as object for the Others connected with the question of consciousness and freedom differently. The text emphasizes the importance of dealing with the anthropologist's presence in the field and in the research beyond the research benefits (such as opportunity for creating data) by focusing on what the fieldwork does to the anthropologist him/herself.
