HOW YOUNG PUPILS PERCEIVE GEOMETRICAL SHAPES AND STRUCTURE?

This study investigates on the ability of seeing, inspecting and observing geometrical objects, in pupils 5-6 years old. In kindergarten, usually the first approach to the geometry is based on spatial experiences, observation of the reality and visualisation.

Starting from an abstract art painting, we propose an activity of shapes manipulation, to improve the knowledge and to promote the transition from static to dynamic images. A qualitative research was implemented in Kindergarten School in two countries, Czech Republic and Italy, in the interdisciplinary field "Art and Mathematics".

The analysis of young children behaviours and difficulties suggests some interesting results from the mathematical point of view and new ideas of work to improve the classroom activity.
