Pulmonary rehabilitation, complex nonpharmacological therapy of patients with chronic respiratory dysfunction

Abstract

Pulmonary rehabilitation is complex nonpharmacological treatment approach to patients with chronic respiratory dysfunction caused by pulmonary or extrapulmonary diseases. The key to success is individualized treatment based on patient related characteristics.

The cornerstone is respiratory physiotherapy in combination with endurance and strength training. Pulmonary rehabilitation programs also include nutritional intervention, psychosocial support and smoking cessation.

The main aim is patient education with long lasting adherence to therapy and positive life change.
