The Relationship Between Semiotics and Film Theory

Publication |
2020

Abstract

The paper analyzes the development of semiotic thinking about film (Ch. Metz, P.

P. Pasolini, U.

Eco) by focusing on the problem of whether film can be understood as a language (based on Saussure's distinction between "langue" and "parole"). It also deals with the issue of gaining meaning in film, which is analyzed as a system of codes and signs.

The intention is to show how and in what way the ideological function of film manifests itself and what tools semiotics provides to reveal the hidden ideological aspects that are part of film cultural production.
