Abstract

Breaststroke is most often seen in swimming lessons for the public. Chest with a raised head and a curved cut (ie with asymmetrical leg movements) are a common reality.

However, if we want to promote health by swimming, then this technique will not serve us much. In addition to compulsory swimming lessons for primary school pupils, many swimming schools currently also offer commercial lessons for all ages.

The content of these lessons is the practice of basic swimming skills and swimming methods, as well as the correction of deviations from the modeling technique in all methods. Swimming schools should be competent to teach children and adults the current technique of swimming according to current didactic procedures.

However, we can often see the teaching of the outdated technique of breaststroke, which appeared at the end of the 19th century (wide shots of the upper and lower limbs with the emergence of minimal propulsive forces). With this ancient technique, however, its didactics "survived".

This means that the initial idea of the movement of the lower limbs takes place sitting on a mat with the wrong angle between the torso and thighs and knees wide to the sides, instead of lying on the abdomen, which at least partially simulates the position of the body in water. The first acquaintance with the activity of the upper limbs looks similar, which is also demonstrated in an inadequate position with a wrong setting of the engagement surfaces.

When training these elements directly in water, exercises supporting outdated techniques are also included. In addition, we can meet with the opinion that in the case of timid children, it is possible to practice this swimming method without having properly acquired the basic swimming skills, especially swimming breathing with the sinking of the whole head.

However, if swimming education for children and adults continues in similar patterns, they cannot be expected to acquire swimming skills at a level that they can use in the future to promote their health.
