Utilization of quantitative magnetic resonance venography in the indication of stenting of venous sinus stenosis

Abstract

Stenting of a haemodynamically significant venous sinus stenosis represents an effective treatment in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). Endovascular treatment is justified by the observation of a pressure gradient across the venous sinus stenosis during digital subtraction angiography (DSA).

A significant pressure gradient is inversely correlated with a decrease in the flow within the stenotic sinus, given that collaterals are absent. The application of a non-invasive MRA study using quantification of the intracerebral vessel flow (qMRA) in this indication is presented.

A constituent part of qMRA - quantitative MR venography (qMRV) - uses phase contrast sequences sensitive enough to detect low venous flow. This the first Czech report on the measurement of the blood flow (in ml/min) in large venous sinus.
