Misogynist fear of the evil of effeminacy of the Holy tribesmen seems like the key factor in the development of the Levitical laws, in The Third Book of Moses, punishing male same-sex anal intercourse. This androcentric fear together with Christianized erotophobia led to sexualized misinterpretation of the Sodom story which legitimized theological hate crimes and deadly persecutions remote from the principal Biblical message of brotherly love.
In the (post)modern times, homophobic panic is preventing the Catholic Church from accepting LGBTIQ+ people as humans equal to the heterosexuals, the standard and normative humans, which makes it a current top divisive Church matter. By discussing the interpretation of the Biblical anti-ʹhomosexualʹ passages, by outlining historical development of (male) homoeroticism in the Mediterranean and the inventions of sodomy and homosexuality-versus-heterosexuality, this paper seeks to establish historical fundaments to answer the question: What is diabolic about homosexuality in the Catholicized cultural context?
