Otherness, prejudices and the acceptance of Roma students in education

Publication at Faculty of Education |
2020

Abstract

The Roma are the largest, but also the less-accepted ethnic minority in the Czech Republic; the otherness of the Roma is often perceived as a result of not only ethnic but also social characteristics. The text analyzes partial results of several research surveys that show that prejudices and antipathy towards the Roma are widespread both in society and in education, among students and among teachers.

The need for more positive and rational acceptance of Roma and their culture is presented as an important condition for the future education of (not only Roma) students.
