Due to its geographical location, Regensburg has always played a bridging role between Central and Eastern Europe, which has an outstanding center with Prague. This led to the fact that the Regensburg University, founded in 1962, was committed to the idea of international understanding through scientific research on southern and eastern Europe.

Cultural, economic and historical issues play a special role up to the present day. There is also a unifying Christian legacy: Regensburg is not just the mother diocese of Prague.

During the Reformation, too, there were diverse relationships that continue to have an impact today. Particularly noteworthy is the importance that Jan Hus had as theological author and formative contemporary for Martin Luther.

Conversely, the Wittenberg Reformation gave rise to a variety of impulses that continued to have an impact in Bohemia.
