Abstract

Central hypothyroidism is a rare form of hypothyroidism characterized by insufficient thyroid stimulation in the absence of pituitary and/or hypothalamic function. Clinical and laboratory parameters for diagnosis and treatment are not entirely applicable in clinical practice.

Although randomized clinical trials are lacking, experts have issued 34 recommendations of varying quality that should lead to improved care for our patients, including quality of life. The recommendations can be divided into several groups - which patients are at risk of central hypothyroidism? Their diagnosis? When and how should the genetic analysis be performed? How should we manage the patient? The review article provides answers to these questions.
