Romani in child directed speech

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

The chapter covers several issues connected with acqusition of languages in (Para-)Romani speaking communities (see also Bakker, this volume). The introduction discusses the scarcity of sources covering these topics in Romani linguistics.

In the second section on acquisition of Romani the focus is more on competence of children acquiring the language, while the other parts concentrate more on input of Romani and language socialization. Within the context of communities where Romani is used as a main language of socialization both structural and discoursive phenomena of CDS are described.

In contexts where other languages are used in communication with children more substantivally than Romani, the focus is mainly on function and cultural context of Romani-derived insertions in CDS.
