The paper concerns with Czechoslovak relations to African countries during the Cold War. It serves as an introduction to the developping area of historians' interest: relations between socialist countries and the Global South.
The paper summarizes present state of knowledge in this field and sketches out possibilities of future research. It presentes several levels, on which one can scrutinize the relations: the area of economic relations, development and concepts of modernity, the area of student and expert mobility, the area of cultural and social contacts, the area of military cooperation, the area of intelligence activities and security cooperation, and the area of contact zone research and the perception of the other.
