Inspiration in the Struggle agains Colonialism. Czechoslovak Cultural Propaganda in Africa

Abstract

The paper concerns with the Czechoslovak self-prezentation in Africa in the field of cultural propaganda during the Cold War. Socialist Czechoslovakia put great effort in creating a sympathetic image of itself in the newly decolonized countries.

A significant part in these efforts played the propagandistic journals such as Solidarity or Czechoslovak Life, and also radio station Radio Prague. The paper analyzes the soft power methods used by Czechoslovak media to win over sympathies of African readers and listeners.

It also introduces the tools of Czechoslovak cultural diplomacy and sketches out what the purpose of these activities was. The paper uses the term "Czechoslovak socialism" as a propagandistic image, strategically employed for the pursue of particular Czechoslovak interests in Africa.
