The paper presents a contrastive usage-based corpus study of contemporary lexical borrowings in gastronomy in Czech and French. The aim was to investigate what languages do borrowings in this field come from, how they are further treated and how similar Czech and French are in this respect.
First, a database was created by excerpting words and multiword units from French and Czech food blogs which provide a good sample of actual discourse. This database of 130 borrowings for each language (with an interesting 38 item overlap) was further investigated in a series of web corpora Aranea, with a focus on their frequency and flectional and derivational morphology.
