Some remarks on the present active participle in Russian and Czech

Abstract

While Russian nominal syntax and especially the role of participles is well known, Czech participles are not described to the same extent. The comparison of a sam- ple of Russian and Czech present active participles from newspaper texts shows that the syntactic functions of Czech present active participles correspond to that of their Russian counterparts, but their frequency seems to be lower.

In addition to this, Russian participle forms fulfill often functions of adjectives and thus are more polysemous and can even show degrees of comparison. This corresponds to the specific position of participles between fomal morphology and derivation which should be studied based on more ample material.
